Only an image for right now, I'll update with a story later. Couldn't have picked a better pup. His name is Samson, by the way. It was my number one pick on a list of many and once I met him I knew it fit him. He's a real trooper!
UPDATE:
As promised, an update. When we got him from the airport...it was 1am our time, midnight Chicago time. Lois changed airports at the last second (for good reason, mind you!!!) because of some stupid business with security/shipment types going to Indianapolis. With the snowstorm pounding Indy at the time, I am VERY glad things worked out to get him to O'Hare instead. I don't think we ever could have gotten to Indianapolis. Roads were shutting down everywhere, and it was certainly VERY unsafe.
His plane was 3 hours late...poor guy. 10 hours total transit time. He was very interested to see all the people, but did not want to come completely out of his crate. It was the only thing familiar, and everything else completely alien!!! I don't blame him. I gave him some food and water, even though it was very late, because it certainly would have been cruel to make him wait until morning. We had gotten a hotel room earlier because we would have been getting home just in time to get up for the morning had we left just then! When I took him outside to potty, he shivered and started crying...was definitely NOT used to cold weather and snow! He was too upset to potty then, so we took him back to the hotel, and he had to go bad enough by then that he did, in a small area of grass in the hotel parking lot. Still shivering and scared, not sure what to think. He clung to me tightly, pressed his head into mine, I could tell he had been carried like that quite a lot. He seemed to calm down right away when he was carried like that.
Samson was such a little trooper that night. He barely cried or made any noise, just occasional whining to wake me up when he needed to go out to potty. No accidents (that would be reserved for later, at home, hehe). He did NOT like the puppy in the mirror, either. A bit shy. I knew after that ordeal it would take him a few days to get his confidence back, I understood. By morning he was used to the cold weather, and didn't shiver when I took him outside anymore.
The car ride home was mostly uneventful. He was very well behaved and didn't cry at all. He was sure to let us know when we had to stop for him, and no accidents in the car, either. His temporary "moving home" didn't bother him one bit!
I wish to say here that Delta was AWESOME, at least on the O'Hare end. We went to baggage claims first, we were in such a rush to get going to meet his plane (originally to arrive at 8pm our time, it was nearly 4pm when we left) that I had forgotten to call or even get a number for them. We got to ride on the trolley system though, which is a lot of fun...O'Hare may as well be a city of its own. Anyway, baggage claims called down to cargo and we got VERY clear and concise directions to the cargo building. It is clear down at the end of the road past every other one! We got a hotel nearby so we wouldn't get lost. They told us Samson's plane was delayed, and got my cell phone number so they could call with any updates if there were some. I got a call in the hotel room when his flight was finally in the air, so I knew he was on his way. One guy stayed past his shift so that he could rush the pup from the plane and to the cargo building...awesome guy! O'Hare/Delta needs to give him a raise!!! All the people in the building, though, were great, genuinely interested in the pup, and especially in his well-being. I couldn't have asked for anything more of them.
