Samson does not like his cage :(. I got him to go to sleep in it after a lot coaxing and reassurances, then left the room. I heard him crying about ten minutes later when he woke up...I was hoping with all his toys and some familiar smells in the cage he might be okay. I went in the room as soon as he quieted down (I don't want him to think that crying will get him anything), and then he sat and waited patiently for me to open his crate door. I think he just needed to know somebody was coming back for him. He got out very quickly though. Right now he is napping inside it because I threw my bedding in there (which he slept on last night, and it should smell like me, so it is familiar). I don't think he realizes it is the cage, however.
Samson has picked a spot right by our front door where he likes to go to lay down and sleep when he's not in our room. Maybe he will make a good guard dog! We have had him bark maybe three times total since we got him? Very quiet dog. Once when I arrived home after morning chores (good dog! on alert!) and a couple times when he got really excited playing with a plastic bottle.
He LOVES the snow now. He has figured out he can trick me into thinking he has to go potty, just so he can go out and play around in the snow...like I said before, VERY smart, he picks things up very quickly and knows how to work things to his advantage...but at this age, I can't hardly take a chance on him going indoors! So I guess for a little bit anyway he wins this round. He might wake up from a nap, act like he needs to go outdoors, then just go outside so he can lay down in the snow!!! I'll give him plenty of playtime in in it tomorrow...we won't have the snow for long!
He is very low energy, which is a big change for me. Ever since I've known Jake I wear out LONG before he does. Samson doesn't have that strong prey drive, so he won't chase me for very long, and I really have to entice him into doing it. If he doesn't feel like doing it, he simply won't chase.
His appointment at the vet is tomorrow. I hope that goes well. It's in Warsaw...I chose that instead of our Albion vet we use on the farm since it is closer and I know the way much better. If Samson was sick or hurt I would get lost for sure. I also got a good reference from somebody I know who is VERY particular...so if she likes that vet, he is most likely a good pick. I'll see what I think when I get back. If not I'll have to look for another place I like along main roads, and close.

Lucius also will 'guard the door'.
I guess there is something instinctive about protecting their home and their people!
